The rediscovery of the Shang began with the discovery of turtle shell. They notice that there were inscribed with strange characters that resembled written Chinese. Historians have argued that it was not true; however Wang Yirong became the first major collector of the inscribed shells, called oracle bones. After the Qing fell, intellectuals began calling for China to embrace Western science and philosophy and they train a generation of Chinese archaeologists. The earliest digs focused on retrieving oracle bones these bones represent natural forces are feared and respected. Foreign tribes can be allies or enemies. Shang fortune tellers foretold predictions about the future; they use the oracle bones to check whether events would occur. Those bones were cleaned, thinned and treated than the diviners would apply a hot object until the surface cracked. At the end, these bones were presented to the king.
